Orange In Tip-Top Shape After First Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Head coach Phil Wheddon of the Syracuse women's soccer team is excited about how his team looks after the first week of preseason training.
"I think we are well ahead of where we have been in the past. The players came back to camp in tip-top shape and our testing was fantastic," said Wheddon. "Our players are hungry to play and we are really excited about where we are."
The Orange return 17 players from last year, while bringing in six newcomers for the 2015 season. One of those players is second-year captain Jackie Firenze, who like Wheddon, is pleased with the steps her team has taken in the offseason.
"I am really impressed with the work that people have done outside of preseason. It really showed in the physical and fitness testing that we did," said Firenze. "We seem to be jelling very quickly and I am very excited."
Firenze is joined by three other teammates in the senior class, whom are responsible for leading by example out on the pitch with a team that is primarily young.
Â
"We have a senior class that really wants to achieve and they set the bar pretty high," said Wheddon.
After a great spring season and summer of training, Wheddon and the Orange will take on Massachusetts in its season opener on Aug. 21 at 4 p.m.
