SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse freshmen Andreas Jenssen and Austin Aviza led the No. 15 Orange men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory in an exhibition match against Buffalo on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Jenssen scored the game's only goal in the 50th minute and Aviza recorded five saves for the shutout.
Â
Syracuse maintained possession and was the more dangerous team in the first half. The Orange recorded six shots and earned a corner kick. Meanwhile, Syracuse limited the Bulls to just two shots in the first 45 minutes.
Â
The Orange broke through in the 50th minute when it took the ball down the right side. Senior Noah Rhynhart (Albany, N.Y.) took a pass inside the box and slipped it through to Jenssen, who put his shot in the back of the net for the only goal Syracuse would need.
Â
Less than five minutes later the Bulls attempted to even the score, but junior Oskar Sewerin knocked the ball away just before it cross the goal line to preserve Syracuse's lead. Aviza recorded three of his five saves in the final 11 minutes, including one with 43 seconds remaining, to secure the Orange shutout.
Â
Much like it did in its exhibition opener against No. 3 Georgetown last weekend, Syracuse substituted liberally as 21 players saw action in the match.
Â
"We wanted to play a lot of people," Orange head coach Ian McIntyre said. "We took a step in the right direction, but (due to the substituting) we became a bit disjointed at times.
Â
Syracuse will have one final tune-up for the regular-season opener when it travels to Storrs, Conn. for its final exhibition match on Saturday, Aug. 22 against Connecticut at 7 p.m.
