The Syracuse volleyball team kicks off the 2015 season this weekend at the UConn Invitational, taking place this Friday and Saturday. Starting Friday, August 28, the Orange will take on Rhode Island at 10 a.m. and will face Hartford at 7:30 p.m. Both games on Friday will be played in West Hartford, Conn.
On Saturday, August 29, the Orange will face former BIG EAST opponent UConn in Storrs, Conn. The match is set for 3 p.m.
The Orange are coming off of its second season in the ACC in which they finished with a 9-21 overall record and a 2-16 conference record.
Syracuse returns 10 players from last season, including four starters and sophomore libero Belle Sand. Senior Silvi Uattara returns as the team's leading contributor on both offense and defense. The outside hitter finished the 2014 season with a team-high 392 kills and team-high 286 digs.
Senior Gosia Wlaszczuk also returns to her position as the Orange's setter after compiling a team-high 792 assists during the 2014 season. Redshirt senior Nicolette Serratore makes her healthy debut this weekend after missing the 2014 season due to injury. She finished second on the 2013 squad in kills with 366 and was named MVP of the 2013 Candlewood Suites Challenge.
The first test for the Orange this season is a Rhode Island squad that finished with an 18-10 overall record and a 9-5 conference record. The Syracuse-Rhode Island series dates back to 1979, with Rhode Island leading the all-time series 12-7. However, the Orange are currently on a seven-game winning streak within the series, with the last win over the Rams taking place during the 2010 season.
Later Friday evening, Syracuse will face Hartford, a team coming off of a 17-13 season in the America East Conference. There have been seven meetings between Syracuse and Hartford since 1986, all of which Syracuse has been victorious. The last meeting took place in 2012.
Syracuse will renew an old BIG EAST matchup against UConn on Saturday in Storrs, Conn. The Orange lead the overall series 28-15. This will be the first meeting between the two since 2012, prior to Syracuse competing in the ACC. The Huskies are coming off a 2014 season in which they finished with a 12-19 record and a 5-15 conference record.
