SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 24 Syracuse University women's basketball suffered its second consecutive loss on Monday night in the Carrier Dome, losing against No. 14/17 Louisville, 71-53. It marks the first time Syracuse has lost two straight games this season.
Â
"Obviously it was not a great game for us," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "We didn't play well at all tonight and ultimately that falls on me as the head coach. I've got to find a way to put a better product on the floor. We have to figure out a way to start winning these games and to play up to our potential, and ultimately that falls on me."
Â
The Orange (14-6, 4-3) got off to a slow start on Monday evening against Louisville (15-5, 7-0). Syracuse was 6-for-33 from the field (18.2 percent) and trailed, 39-20, at halftime. It marked the fewest points scored by the club in the opening 20 minutes since Feb. 15, 2015 at Virginia Tech.
Â
Once down 29 points in the second quarter, Syracuse came out with a different mindset in the third quarter. A free throw from senior guard Cornelia Fondren with 15 seconds remaining in the frame made it an 11-point contest. That would be the closest it got, as Louisville outscored the Orange, 15-8, over the remainder of regulation.
Â
For the 10th time this year, junior guard Alexis Peterson led the squad in scoring, tallying 13 points on the night. Peterson also paced the team with six assists.
Â
Senior guards Brianna Butler and Fondren each notched eight points against Louisville. Redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes had three points and now has 996 points scored in her collegiate career.
Â
Syracuse will host conference-foe Boston College next on Wednesday night in the Carrier Dome. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
Â
Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at 1-888-DOMETIX, or by visiting the Carrier Dome box office (Gate B) during normal business hours.
