Orange Fall to UVA in Overtime
10/15/2016 4:24:00 PM | Field Hockey
The No. 2 Syracuse field hockey team (12-2, 4-2 ACC) dropped its final regular season conference game on Saturday, when No. 10 Virginia (10-5), scored the game's only goal in overtime to take a 1-0 victory.
It was the second-consecutive Syracuse-UVA matchup that needed extra time to be decided after the Orange beat the Cavaliers in overtime of last season's ACC Championship game. This time it was UVA's Lucy Hyams who broke the scoring drought to defeat Syracuse.
After Syracuse had put eight shots on cage to UVA's five through the first-70 minutes, and drawn five penalty corners to the Cavaliers one, it was the Hoos' second corner which eventually did SU in 4:30 into overtime.
Hyams converted her goal on an assist from Tara Vitesse.
For the Orange, Regan Spencer made three saves in net for SU, with Roos Weers and Nijsje Venrooy each turning in a defensive save. Lucas Carrera made seven stops in cage for UVA with the Cavaliers also turning in a defensive save.
Weers and Liz Sack each recorded three shots in the loss, with Elaine Carey and Lies Lagerweij chipping in two apiece.
Syracuse will return to action next Sunday, Oct. 23 at No. 14 Boston University. That game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start and will be shown on the Patriot League Network.
