Syracuse defeated No. 22 Michigan State on Nov. 30
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Coming off its most successful season in program history, head coach Quentin Hillsman wanted to challenge the 2016-17 Syracuse women's basketball team from the start. For the first time, Syracuse took on three nationally-ranked opponents in the first month of the season.
Following consecutive losses against No. 8/8 Ohio State on Nov. 26 and No. 18/17 DePaul on Nov. 27, the Orange bounced back with a victory against No. 22 Michigan State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Nov. 30.
"We could have scheduled a little bit softer on the front end," said Hillsman in his press conference following the victory against the Spartans. "That's not what I wanted to do. I didn't want to give our program a false sense of reality."
"This was a bounce-back game, we definitely had to have this game," added Hillsman. "That's all we talk about coming into this game that we needed to win. Our kids really came out and played with a lot of effort and intensity. That's what we were missing against DePaul."
With the team's win against Michigan State, Syracuse has defeated at least one nationally-ranked opponent each of the last 10 years. Last season, the Orange set a program record by defeating five nationally-ranked foes.
Since the start of Hillsman's tenure in 2006-07, the club has defeated 17 opponents ranked in the top 25 of the USA Today Coaches Poll. In the 23 seasons prior (the coaches' rankings began during the 1984-85 campaign), the program only notched eight wins against nationally-ranked opponents.
Five non-conference contests remain on Syracuse's regular-season slate. Only one future non-conference foe is currently ranked in the major national polls, No. 25/19 Texas A&M.
The Orange return to court on Sunday afternoon against Central Connecticut State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, as well.
Sunday's game is Faith and Family Day in the Carrier Dome. The first 'Cuse Carnival of the 2016-17 season will take place in the backcourt, hosted by the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
