Georgia Tech enters Sunday's game with a 14-9 overall record and 4-6 mark in conference competition. The Yellow Jackets have won each of their last two games. In its last contest, Georgia Tech defeated Virginia Tech, 51-34, on Feb. 4. Senior guard Aaliyah Whiteside, the conference's leading scorer, notched 13 points against the Hokies.
Pressure Defense
Under head coach Quentin Hillsman, Syracuse has constantly applied pressure with its full-court pressure defense. The effects of this defense could not be more evident than its amount of steals per game. Currently, the Orange rank first in the Atlantic Coast Conference and second in the country with 14.1 steals per game.
Similar to last season, senior guard Cornelia Fondren and junior guard Alexis Peterson are leading the charge in that front. Fondren currently averages 2.74 steals per game, which ranks third in the conference and 34th nationally. Peterson averages 2.64 steals per contest, which ranks fourth in the league and 42nd in the country.
In the season opener at Rhode Island on Nov. 13, Peterson recorded 10 steals, setting a Syracuse single-game record. Fondren replicated Peterson's feat 11 games later against Howard on Dec. 30.
Last Time Out
Hitting the opening 3-point field goal on her first attempt, senior guard Brianna Butler propelled Syracuse to an 83-62 victory against Atlantic Coast Conference foe Clemson on Feb. 4 at the Carrier Dome.
Freshman guard Abby Grant put the exclamation point on both the first and second quarters with 3-pointers at the buzzer to send the team into the locker room with a 39-26 advantage.
The Orange defense limited scoring for the Tigers. Syracuse forced 33 turnovers on the night, Clemson's highest amount of turnovers of the season. The Orange capitalized off of its opponent's misfortunate with 21 second-chance points. Syracuse had 18 steals on the night, as well.
Syracuse had four players score in double-figures. Butler paced the Orange with 17 points, knocking down five shots from behind the arc. Junior guard Peterson contributed 15 points, while redshirt senior guard Maggie Morrison and junior center Briana Day notched 11 points apiece.
