Six Home Dates Highlight 2016 Field Hockey Schedule
6/28/2016 10:17:00 AM | Field Hockey
The 2016 Syracuse field hockey team will square off with nine teams that earned berths into the NCAA Tournament last season and play six home contests, head coach Ange Bradley announced.
The Orange, which claimed the first National Championship in program history last season, will honor that team in the home opener against Boston College on Sept. 9, with the unveiling of the 2015 championship banner. 'Cuse will also host Stanford, Penn, Louisville, Duke and Indiana at J.S. Coyne Stadium this season.
Syracuse begins play in the City of Brotherly Love on Aug. 26, when the Orange play Temple and follow that contest up with a match against 2015 Big Ten Champion Maryland two days later. Both games will take place at St. Joeseph's.
'Cuse will stay on the road for the first weekend in September, with back-to-back games at Hofstra, beginning with a neutral site contest with Liberty on Sept. 3 before taking on the Pride in the first true road game of the season Sept. 4.
The first home weekend for SU comes with a strong test, taking on a pair of teams who finished in the top-13 of the final NFHCA poll last season. After hosting Boston College on Sept. 9, 'Cuse will face Stanford on Sept. 11 for what will be Military and First Responders Day at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
The Orange will then go back on the road for back-to-back ACC contests, beginning with Wake Forest on Sept. 17 and following that up with a rematch of last year's NCAA and ACC title games at North Carolina on Sept. 23.
Penn comes to 'Cuse on Sept. 25 for a game which is going to be the annual Carnival Day, with games and events taking place in the Manley Field House parking lots adjacent to the stadium. It's then back to ACC play on Sept. 30, when Louisville makes its trip back to 'Cuse after the Orange visited the Cardinals last season. That contest will be SU Employee Appreciation Day and SAAC day.
Coach Bradley's squad goes to Bucknell on Oct. 2 before playing its final home conference game on Oct. 7 against Duke. Syracuse defeated the Blue Devils 1-0 in overtime last season during their only meeting. The Duke game will have a multitude of events as it's the annual 'Pink Game' to support breast cancer awareness and raise funds for the cause. It's also Girl Scout Day and Kids Club Day at J.S. Coyne Stadium with in-game elements planned for those two groups as well.
Syracuse will then embark on its longest road stretch of the season, with 23 days in between home contests as 'Cuse goes to Cornell (Oct. 9), Virginia (Oct. 15) and Boston University (Oct. 23) before closing out the regular season at home Oct. 30 against Indiana on Senior Day. The Orange will honor their 2016 seniors against the Hoosiers, while it's also going to be Family/Alumni Weekend in 'Cuse in what's sure to draw a large crowd for the 2015 national champs.
The ACC Tournament will run from Nov. 3-6 in Winston-Salem, N.C. with NCAA Tournament to follow. The first and second rounds will take place on campus sites Nov. 13-14, with Syracuse looking to make a third-straight Final Four, which will be in Norfolk, Va. from Nov. 18-20 this season.
Admission is free to all of the Orange's six regular season home games.
