SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 5/3 Syracuse scored twice in the second half and posted its third consecutive shutout in a 2-0 victory against No. 15/11 Boston College on Friday, Sept. 16. With the win, the Orange have equaled the best start in program history, beginning the season with a 7-0 record. Syracuse also improves to 2-0 in ACC play, while the Eagles are now 4-2-1 overall, 1-1 in league action.
Â
"First half, Boston College did a good job of disrupting the game," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "That first goal calmed us down a bit and then the game opened up a little bit. They had to chase it. And that second goal was obviously a big one. We showed a lot of character, stayed the course and found a way to win this game."
Â
Syracuse applied pressure early on the Eagles, earning two corner kicks in the first 11-plus minutes of play. But the Eagles regained the momentum and had their best scoring chance of the night in the 16th minute when Isaac Normesinu got off a shot on goal, but goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert was there for the save. It would be Boston College's only shot on frame in the match.
Â
The Orange were able to connect their passes late in the half and senior Sergio Camargo had a chance to get Syracuse on the scoreboard, but Cedric Saladin made the save as the teams were tied, 0-0, at halftime.
Â
Syracuse came out strong after intermission and sophomore Jonathan Hagman recorded his second goal of the season from 25 feet on an assist from freshman Johannes Pieles. The Eagles responded by earning back-to-back corner kicks in the 59th minute, but didn't get off a shot on either attempt.
Â
The Orange continued to send numbers forward and added an insurance goal in the 74th minute. Camargo sent the ball to the left side to senior Chris Nanco. Nanco crossed the ball into the box where he hit a cutting Kenny Lassiter, who knocked the ball into the net for his career-high third goal of the season.
Â
Syracuse's back line of senior Louis Cross and sophomores Kamal Miller and Miles Robinson did not allow Boston College to get off another shot the remainder of the game. The Orange successfully defended against a corner kick in the 84th minute as they posted their third consecutive shutout and fifth this season in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament quarterfinal.
Â
Overall, Syracuse recorded eight shots on goal and three corner kicks, while the Eagles had three shots and four corner kicks.
Â
The Orange will try to extend their winning streak on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at Cornell at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Freshman Johannes Pieles had an assist against Boston College and has now had at least one point in five of seven matches this season … Friday's match was played before a crowd of 2,132, which is the fifth-largest crowd in the history of the SU Soccer Stadium.
