9/3/2016 2:38:00 PM | Field Hockey
Lies Lagerweij knotted the equalizer in the final two minutes then scored again in overtime for the No. 2 Syracuse field hockey team (3-0) to overcome a late deficit and down No. 13 Liberty (0-3) in overtime on Saturday at Hofstra.
Â
The Orange got an early goal from Laura Hurff to take a 1-0 lead heading into halftime, but two second-half Flames goals gave them the advantage in the final-10 minutes of play before Lagerweij and the Orange rallied to remain unbeaten on the young season.
Â
Hurff opened the scoring 22:04 into play after Annalena Ulbrich started the action by slipping the ball through defenders to Hurff, who buried the shot past Flames' goalkeeper Allison Schaefer.
Â
Schaefer was tested many times by the Orange on the afternoon, coming up with 10 saves of her own and also being aided by a defensive save.
Â
Liberty answered Hurff's goal quickly out of the locker room, with Pippa Best scoring on a rebound off a Syracuse defensive save of its own.
Â
Then in the 57th minute, the Flames took the lead for the first time, when Serena Barr finished a feed from Bethany Barr to make it 2-1 with time winding down.
Â
Lagerweij then took over for 'Cuse.
Â
Roos Weers started the first scoring play for the Orange with under-three minutes to go. She sent it into the arc from the top, where Lagerweij was able to beat Schaefer for the equalizer.
Â
Syracuse then scored its game-winner off a penalty corner in overtime, when Liz Sack sent a ball onto Lagerweij who won it for 'Cuse.
Â
The Orange drew 10 corners to Liberty's three in the game and out-shot the Flames 22-8 on the day.
Â
Regan Spencer made five saves in net for the Orange.
Â
Syracuse will have little time to rest, as 'Cuse is set to square off with tournament host Hofstra on Sunday.
