ITHACA, N.Y. – In a game that was close for much of the first and second periods, the Syracuse women's hockey team gave up three goals in the third, losing to Cornell, 7-2, on the road on Tuesday night.
"It certainly didn't feel like a 7-2 game," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "We played hard and created some good scoring chances in the first two periods, but fell victim to a 5-3 power play goal early in the third and never recovered."
Cornell took a 2-0 lead in the first period, but a Big Red penalty led to a power play goal set up by Allie Munroe and Larissa Martyniuk to freshman Savannah Rennie to bring the score within one. It was Rennie's third goal of the season.
The Big Red answered with another goal in the second, but Munroe brought the Orange right back late in the frame. It was Munroe's second goal this season. Cornell then scored three unanswered goals in the third period.
Maddi Welch got the starting nod in net and registered 12 saves in the game. Freshman Ady Cohen came in as relief in the third and registered three saves in only her second game played this season.
The Orange will now turn their attention solely to College Hockey America play with the non-conference portion of the schedule out of the way. Syracuse will host Penn State for a weekend series at Tennity Ice Pavilion on Friday and Saturday to continue CHA play. Syracuse has not faced Penn State yet this season.
