Syracuse defeats Virginia, 54-49, on Monday night
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's basketball team overcame a 17-point deficit to earn a 54-49 win against Virginia at the Carrier Dome on Monday night.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Virginia (11-3) jumped out to a 14-0 lead to begin the game before redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes sank a pair of free throws for the Orange to put Syracuse (10-5) on the board. Syracuse ended the first half down, 29-18, after shooting 4-of-44 from the field.
Early in the third quarter, senior guard Alexis Peterson knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the Virginia lead to 33-28. Syracuse took its first lead of the game with 8:15 left in the fourth quarter on a jumper from Peterson to go ahead, 44-42. The Cavaliers would retake the lead twice, before an 8-2 Orange sealed the victory.
Q'S TAKE
"Alexis Peterson, what an amazing second half by her, she's just amazing. Briana Day came out and really rebounded the ball. She had eight offensive rebounds. One of the key stats is that we had 10 team rebounds, so we beat them to a lot of loose balls. This was just an amazing win by our team, they fought really hard and were really aggressive. I'm just really proud of their effort."
OF NOTE
Head coach Quentin Hillsman recorded his 229th victory at the helm of the Syracuse women's basketball team, matching the program record for most coaching wins. Barbara Jacobs tallied 229 victories from 1979-93.
The 17-point comeback for the Orange was the biggest deficit overcome this season, topping an eight-point hole against Old Dominion on Dec. 20. Syracuse's 54 points was the lowest point total for the Orange this season.
Peterson has now scored double-digits in 35 straight games and has 20-plus points in the last four games. Peterson finished with 21 points, eight assists, and five steals.
Sykes and senior center Briana Day each finished one point shy of a double-double. Sykes had nine points and 10 rebounds, while Day had nine points and 13 rebounds.
