WENTZVILLE, Mo. – The Syracuse women's hockey team (9-10-5, 8-2-2) entered the third period locked in a 0-0 tie with Lindenwood on Saturday afternoon on the road. The Orange responded to the challenge with three goals in the final period to claim a 3-0 shutout win.
"Another solid effort today against a more determined Lindenwood squad," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "We did a nice job defensively for 60 minutes and scored some timely goals in the third period for the weekend sweep."
Emily Costales broke through first in the third period to give the Orange a lead. It was Costales' first game-winner of the season. Heather Schwarz scored her 10th goal of the season midway through the final frame and Dakota Derrer scored the final goal a minute later.
Goaltender Abbey Miller secured her fifth shutout of the season and currently has a 150:30 scoreless streak ongoing beginning against Penn State on Jan. 14. That mark is the second highest in program history following a 156:54 scoreless streak from Lucy Schoedel dating Oct. 17, 2008 through Nov. 1, 2008.
Syracuse has hit a stride offensively, outscoring conference opponents in 2017, 15-2, and outshooting them, 142-59. 'Cuse hasn't allowed a power play goal in four consecutive games and today Syracuse tied a season-low with only two penalties called against them. It was the sixth shutout of the season for the Orange and the fifth consecutive game in which they have held Lindenwood scoreless dating back to last season.
The Orange will return home to host No. 7 Robert Morris on Jan. 27 and 28. The Colonials are currently in first place in CHA standings with a two point lead on Syracuse. The two teams met in November in Pittsburgh. The first game resulted in a 2-2 tie and the second game was won, 2-1, by the Colonials.
