Syracuse opens its season on April 2 at the Doc Hosea Invite
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 2017 season is right around the corner for the Syracuse women's rowing program. Since the calendar flipped more than three weeks ago, Syracuse has been busy preparing for another successful campaign.
Coming off their first NCAA Championship appearance since 2002, the Orange began their winter training in Florida. Similar to the men's side, the program annually heads south to kick off preparation for the upcoming spring season.
"The Florida training trip has two very important purposes," head coach Justin Moore stated. First, we only take 26 rowers, so not the full squad. The women know that in order to be selected for the trip, fitness and work ethic are going to play an extremely important role. Second, we have outstanding indoor training facilities, but there are a few things that can only be accomplished on the water."
Typically, the team will return from its trip and continue its training on the ergometers and in the rowing tank at Archbold Gymnasium. In a unique turn of events, the waters at the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse in Liverpool were clear when the Orange returned and were able to continue rowing on the water.
"Whenever the weather provides us an opportunity to row in January or February, the coaches need to do a cost benefit analysis," added Moore. "There is real value in establishing a productive training pattern, and not deviating from it, in the winter months. There is also tremendous value to practicing the craft of moving a boat, rather than conditioning oneself for this task. These past three days acted as an extension to our winter training trip. These last three days on the water will make February feel even shorter."
It is back to business as usual for the Syracuse women's rowing program as it returns to its indoor training in preparation for the spring. The team will open its season on Sunday, April 2 at the Doc Hosea Invite in West Windsor, N.J.
