
Hilpert, Pieles Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse junior Hendrik Hilpert and sophomore Johannes Pieles have been selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Men's Soccer Team. It marks the second consecutive year that Hilpert has earned the honor, while Pieles is making his first appearance on the all-district team. Both will now go on the ballot for the national CoSIDA Academic All-America Team, which will be announced in December.

Hilpert started 17 of the 18 matches in which he played and recorded a career-high 60 saves in 2017. He posted a 1.34 goal-against average and a .706 save percentage. Hilpert earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording a career-best nine saves in a 0-0 tie against then No. 1 Wake Forest, the second-highest scoring team in the nation. The 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team honoree ranks fourth in shutouts (19) and wins (28) on Syracuse's career record lists. The finance and economics major was honored as the 2015-16 Martin J. Whitman School of Management Freshman of the Year and has been a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester.

Pieles recorded career highs in every statistical category this season. He led the team in points (16) and goals (6) and ranked second in assists (4). He posted at least one point in nine of the 17 matches in which he played. Pieles, a sport management major, was a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in both semesters as a freshman.

CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs. The nominee must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in both undergraduate and graduate work. He/she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen, redshirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
