SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Emily Hawryschuk scored three goals to lead No. 5/5 Syracuse to a 17-8 victory against Massachusetts on Saturday, Feb. 25 in the Carrier Dome. The win extends the Orange's winning streak to start the season to four games.
Â
"It was a great opportunity to play against a well-coached Massachusetts team," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "It was a super physical game which led to some turnovers on our part. It was a great challenge to refocus. I'm happy with the plays we did make and it was a great opportunity to learn."
Â
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
Syracuse never trailed in the contest and held a 3-2 lead at the 17:40 mark. Junior Alie Jimerson (Irving, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal with 17:20 on the clock to spark the Orange on a 5-0 scoring run. Junior Riley Donahue had a goal and an assist during the run, and sophomore Nicole Levy capped the offensive outburst with two straight goals.
Â
The Minutewomen (1-3) halted the run when Kiley Anderson scored one of her four goals with 53 seconds left in the half, but Hawryschuk converted a free position attempt with 21 seconds on the clock to give Syracuse a 9-3 halftime lead.
Â
Massachusetts netted back-to-back goals to cut Syracuse's advantage to 11-6 with 23:20 remaining, but Syracuse recorded six of the game's final eight goals to record the 17-8 victory.
Â
OF NOTE
Donahue led the Orange with five points (2g, 3a) and leads the team in scoring with 19 points. Hawryschuk's three goals against the Minutewomen give her a team-best 11 this season. Overall, 10 different players found the back of the net for Syracuse, including six who scored two or more goals.
