Romero throws shutout in game one
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman Alexa Romero (8-6) dished out her fifth shutout of the season as the Orange used a two-game sweep of non-conference and in-state foe Canisius (15-24, 3-5 MAAC) to begin a five-game road trip. Syracuse (21-15, 3-9 ACC) defeated the Golden Griffins 9-0 in game one and 8-2 in game two.
Romero tallied seven strikeouts in game one, leading the Orange to the 9-0 five-inning victory. AnnaMarie Gatti (6-5) earned the victory in game two with four strikeouts in five innings pitched, while senior Sydney O'Hara added three strikeouts of her own in the final two innings of the second game.
Game One
Five Orange players in junior Sammy Fernandez, sophomore Alicia Hansen, O'Hara, sophomore Bryce Holmgren and junior Faith Cain tallied one hit apiece. O'Hara racked up three walks on the game, while junior Jessica Heese had a pair of her own.
The Orange used a five-run top of the fifth frame after leading 4-0 to seal the mercy-rule victory. The frame began with back-to-back walks from Heese and junior Kelsey Johnson to put two runners on base.
Freshman Toni Martin loaded the bases after reaching off an error with a sacrifice bunt, allowing Heese to score and putting Johnson on third base.
Martin continued the action as she stole second, allowing Johnson to score off a throwing error from the Griffs.
An RBI double from Hansen sent Martin home for the score and put senior Alyssa Dewes on third. O'Hara walked to load the bases, before Holmgren hit a 2 RBI single for the final 9-0 score.
Game Two
The Orange used a five-run inning for the second time of the doubleheader to seal the twinbill sweep.
Fernandez and Hansen began the action with a pair of singles to put two runners on base. O'Hara followed with a walk to load the bases for SU.
Holmgren backed it up with an RBI walk of her own to send Fernandez home for the score, before Cain came to home plate and hit a 2 RBI single up the middle to give the Orange a 3-0 lead.
A pair of outs put Syracuse on edge, but a 2 RBI single up the middle from redshirt junior Olivia Martinez gave the Orange a 5-0 advantage.
Cain padded the score with a 3 RBI home run in the top of the second inning to give Syracuse the 8-0 lead.
Canisius tallied a pair of runs, but it wasn't enough to split the doubleheader.
Syracuse closes out its five-game road trip with a three-game series at Pittsburgh. The Orange and the Panthers will play one game each day beginning Friday, April 14.
