Syracuse defeats Harvard and Dartmouth in four of five races
SARATOGA, N.Y. – For the second straight season and only the third time in program history, the No. 17 Syracuse women's rowing team claimed the O'Leary Cup when its first varsity eight crew defeated No. 15 Harvard and Dartmouth on Saturday morning on Fish Creek.
"We have been making an effort with our scheduling to get races with highly-competitive, ranked teams," head coach Justin Moore said. "To come out and sweep those guys, it's reflective of how hard our women's program has worked."
Syracuse finished in first place in four of the five events it competed in, the first, second, and third varsity eight races and the first varsity four competition. The Orange second varsity four boat took home runner-up honors, as Harvard placed first.
The first varsity eight crew defended seized the O'Leary Cup for the second consecutive year for the first time in Syracuse women's rowing history. Prior to last season, the Orange had not won the O'Leary Cup since 2001.
"It was important for us to show people that last year was not a fluke, that we are going to consistently produce good crews," added Moore.
In addition to the first varsity eight boat, the second and third varsity eight crews continued their perfect starts to the 2017 campaign with victories on Saturday morning. The three boats all collected wins in the season opener at the Doc Hosea Invite in Camden, N.J. on April 2.
"We were blessed with fantastic conditions and a great race course," concluded Moore. "The coaching staff was very, very pleased with how things went today."
The team is back returns to the water on Saturday, April 22 at the Clemson Invite on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
