Orange Take Home Hardware in Season Opener

No. 18 Syracuse was victorious in four of five events
CAMDEN, N.J. – The No. 18 Syracuse women's rowing team claimed the Kittel Cup and Orange Challenge Cup in its season opener, the Doc Hosea Invite, on Sunday afternoon. Syracuse also brought home the inaugural Doc Hosea Invite Trophy, which was awarded to the team with most points collected on the day.
"I think that the work that we did over the winter was demonstrated in the second 1,000 meters of the two races that we had today," head coach Justin Moore stated. "In particular in the first varsity eight final, the race was still bunched up quite a bit at the 800-meter mark. Then, we were able to create some clear separation and get clear of both Pennsylvania and Northeastern. The only way to do that is by being really fit. I think our team's fitness showed up in the second 1,000 meters."
The Orange earned victories in the first, second, and third varsity eight competitions and also finished in first place in the second varsity four race. The first varsity four crew placed third, behind Navy and Minnesota.
With the first varsity eight boat's victory against Northeastern and Pennsylvania, Syracuse claimed the Kittel Cup and Orange Challenge Cup, respectively. The Orange secured the Orange Challenge Cup after falling short against the Quakers at least season's Doc Hosea Invite in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
"They (Northeastern and Pennsylvania) were ahead of us on the learning curve as this was our first time lining up against other opponents and going down the 2,000-meter race course," commented Moore. "With that, we had to keep things simple and do a very good job with the basic aspects of the sport. I think across the board the team did a really nice job."
No. 18 Syracuse is back in action on Saturday, April 15 when it takes on Dartmouth and Harvard in Saratoga, N.Y.
