Syracuse completed its first day at the Clemson Invite
CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 15 Syracuse women's rowing team hit the water for the first time at the Clemson Invite on Lake Hartwell, the site of the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, on Saturday.
"We have positioned our team very well for some highly competitive finals tomorrow morning," head coach Justin Moore stated. "Everyone is really looking forward to that."
Live results, audio, and video of Sunday's finals are available. Racing will begin at 7:30 a.m.
The second varsity eight crew had arguably the best day among the five Syracuse boats, recording two second-place finishes. In the process, the Orange second varsity eight crew defeated the likes of Gonzaga, Indiana, Louisville, and Pennsylvania, all of which came into the event ranked in latest USRowing/CRCA Poll or receiving votes.
Following a third-place showing in its morning session, the first varsity eight boat returned with a runner-up finish in the afternoon. Both the first and second varsity eight crews earned spots in Sunday's grand finals.
"This morning was the first time we have experienced being behind," added Moore. "Similar to a coach going in at halftime and being able to work with the team, we had a good talk with the team to change a few simple things. They did a great job of executing it, which resulted in a much better performance this afternoon."
The third varsity eight boat placed third in the morning, then followed up with a second-place showing in the latter session. The first varsity four crew notched fourth and fifth place finishes, while the second varsity four placed fourth and second in their respective races.
"This is a fantastic regatta to be going to in April," commented Moore. "The racing is competitive and very close. In the afternoon, we took this morning's experience, knowing what we wanted to change, and the women did a great job of coming together and executing."
