First varsity eight crew places fourth in grand final
CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 15 Syracuse women's rowing team finished in sixth place in the overall team competition at the Clemson Invite on Sunday morning, behind strong showings from the first and second varsity eight boats.
"It was a mixed regatta for us," head coach Justin Moore said. "The first varsity eight had a really nice progression through the racing and had a great final today. The second varsity eight held the position that we thought they could. The first varsity four had a tough go. While we feel good about the first varsity eight performance, we know can do better as a team."
The first varsity eight crew recorded one of the team's best finishes on Lake Hartwell, site of the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. Syracuse finished in fourth place in the grand final, covering the 2,000-meter course in 6:23.803. In the process, the Orange defeated the top boats from No. 10 Virginia, No. 11 Wisconsin, and No. 20 Indiana.
Syracuse notched a sixth-place showing in the top-level final of the second varsity eight competition, its third-best effort at the annual regatta. The Orange finished the race in a time of 6:47.842, less than three seconds behind fifth-place Duke.
The third varsity eight boat placed third in the grand final, completing the race course in a time of 7:15.626. Syracuse's second varsity four crew recorded a victory in the second-level final, good enough for eighth place overall. The Orange notched a 14th-place performance in the first varsity four competition.
"We have been working on scheduling strong opponents for the last few years," added Moore. "This year's schedule has been really great for us. The athletes need to see the speed. They need to see what the expectation is."
Syracuse will complete its 2017 regular season slate on Saturday, April 29 when it takes on No. 6 Princeton, No. 12 Iowa, and Pennsylvania on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
"One of the hardest challenges going into next week is going to be making sure the focus is in the right place," concluded Moore. "We have to quickly change gears back to being students in the final week of school and understand that we are going to see two other highly-ranked programs. Focus is going to be a very big theme for this week."
