Syracuse notches a first-place showing and runner-up effort
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 15 Syracuse women's rowing team concluded its 2017 regular season on Saturday morning against No. 7 Princeton, No. 11 Iowa, and Pennsylvania on Lake Carnegie on the campus of Princeton University.
Syracuse recorded a victory in the third varsity eight competition and placed second in the first varsity eight race, topping Iowa and Pennsylvania.
"The race schedule is allowing us to get on the line with teams ranked right around us or slightly above us," head coach Justin Moore stated. "This was the case where Princeton and Iowa were both ranked above us. I thought the women did a good job."
In the first event of the morning, the Orange first varsity eight boat continued its strong 2017 campaign. The three-time Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week finished in second place to host Princeton, but finished ahead of Iowa and Pennsylvania. It marked the third straight week that the team's top boat has defeated a higher ranked opponent.
"We were racing Iowa through the 1,000," commented Moore. "We did a nice job in the second 1,000 meters, creating separation between us and Iowa."
Coming off a third-place showing at the Clemson Invite on April 22, the third varsity eight crew notched a first-place performance, coming in ahead of Princeton and Iowa.
"The future is looking pretty bright," added Moore. "These guys are looking like they are understanding what it takes to compete and win at that level. We are excited to see them in the next year take the step forward to be able move into our NCAA boats."
The Syracuse second varsity eight and second varsity four boats each finished in third place in their respective races, while the first varsity four crew placed fourth.
"I want to give the second varsity eight a lot of credit for a gritty performance," concluded Moore. "With some illness and shakeups in the lineup, I think those guys did a very good job, even though they didn't get the result they wanted."
With the completion of the 2017 regular season, the Orange will prepare for its annual conference championship, the ACC Championship. The team will hit the water on Sunday, May 14 on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
