CLEMSON, S.C. – Behind a first-place finish from the second varsity eight crew, the No. 13 Syracuse women's rowing team placed second at the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on Lake Hartwell. It marks the second straight season that Syracuse has notched a runner-up showing at the annual conference championship regatta.
Following the competition, the second varsity eight boat was named the 2017 ACC Crew of the Year, while head coach Justin Moore collected 2017 ACC Coach of the Year honors. It marked the program's second and third individual postseason honors since joining the conference.
The team recorded 83 points in its fourth ACC Championship, its most as a league member. Virginia won its eighth straight team title, its 17th championship in 18 years.
"It was great," commented Moore. "Overall, I thought the team had a very strong race."
The Orange second varsity eight boat chased down 17-time defending ACC champion Virginia in an epic finish to claim the grand final. It marks Syracuse's first individual conference title as a league member and first since winning the first varsity four competition at the 2012 BIG EAST Championship.
"They were moving in training," said Moore. "We knew they were going to have a great performance down here, based on how they were going in training. They did deliver it on the day. They really raced to their potential today."
In the first varsity eight competition, the Orange were edged out by Notre Dame at the finish line, placing third overall. The three-time ACC Crew of the Week covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:23.584 on Sunday afternoon.
"They (the first varsity eight crew) definitely don't feel like they rowed to their fullest potential and that's pretty awesome when you're duking it out to tenths of a second for a silver-medal finish," added Moore.
Syracuse placed fourth in the first varsity four race, while the second varsity four and third varsity eight boats each notched runner-up efforts in their final events of the 2017 campaign.
The Orange now await their postseason fate. The 2017 NCAA Championship field will be revealed on Tuesday night. The 22 participating teams will be revealed at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
