Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior guard Miranda Drummond is one of 20 candidates for the 2019 Cheryl Miller Award. Named after three-time Niasmith Player of the Year and Basketball Hall of Famer, the annual award recognizes the top small forwards in women's NCAA Division I basketball. It is in its second year.
Drummond started all 31 games for the Orange last season, helping her squad to a sixth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. She helped 'Cuse to a 22-9 overall and 10-6 Atlantic Coast Conference record. Drummond averaged 14.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as a junior and scored a season-high 38 points in Syracuse's upset over No.11/12 Florida State on Jan. 7. That same game she made a season-high 14 field goals, eight of which were from 3-point range.
She led the Orange in 3-pointers made (84), 3-point field goal percentage (.402) and rebounds per game last year and added a pair of double doubles.
Connecticut's Gabby Williams was the inaugural winner of the Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award last season.
Drummond is one of five ACC small forwards on the watch list. The Orange will face eight teams with a player with a Cheryl Miller Award candidate on their squad this season.
Syracuse begins the 2018-19 campaign Tuesday, Nov. 6 against fellow Cheryl Miller Award candidate Lexi Klabo and North Dakota at 3 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
