10/27/2018 5:00:00 PM | Ice Hockey
POTSDAM, N.Y. - Senior defenseman Allie Munroe scored twice in the final two minutes of regulation to extend the game into overtime, but the Syracuse women's hockey team could not complete its comeback against No. 2 Clarkson in the extra period, losing 4-3 to the defending national champions Saturday afternoon.Â
Syracuse moves to 2-6 overall, including a 2-2 mark in College Hockey America play, with the setback.
"We responded well today," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "It was good to see a solid team effort. Munroe's late-game heroics gave us a chance in OT. Moving forward, it's important for us to recognize what we're capable of."
HOW IT UNFOLDED
After a deadlocked 0-0 first period, the scoring came fast and furious starting in the second.
T.T. Cianfarano scored on a power play to give Clarkson a 1-0 lead, but Syracuse answered when freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine scored on a penalty shot at 16:53. The Orange and the Golden Knights entered the second intermission tied, 1-1.
The Golden Knights took a 2-1 lead at 6:37 in the third and held that advantage throughout the majority of the period. With under two minutes left in regulation, it was time for Munroe's late-game heroics.
The Orange's co-captain scored her first goal at 18:17, tying the game at two. Clarkson responded 24 seconds later with a goal to retake the lead, but Munroe did not let that last.
She scored her second of the period - and her second of the season - with 32 seconds left to play in regulation, evening the game at 3 and forcing overtime.
Clarkson's Cianfarano scored the game-winner - her second of the game - two minutes into the first overtime period, sealing the defending national champions' 4-3 victory.
OF NOTE
Bellefontaine now leads the team in goals with four, and she is the leading point-getter with seven through six games. Munroe's goals were her first two of the year.Â
Bellefontaine, junior forward Kelli Rowswell and freshman forward Abby Moloughney each recorded assists in the game. Rowswell now holds the team lead in assists with five, recording two in yesterday's game against Clarkson.
Senior goaltender Maddi Welch started in goal and recorded 19 saves.
