Welch's Shutout Leads Orange to 1-0 Victory at Penn State
11/3/2018 4:30:00 PM | Ice Hockey
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior goaltender Maddi Welch delivered her first shutout of the season Saturday afternoon, recording 18 saves to blank Penn State in the Syracuse hockey team's 1-0 win over its College Hockey America foe.
The Orange move to 3-6 overall and 3-2 in CHA play with the win.
"Solid defensive effort today," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "It was great to see Maddi get the shutout. Our third period was excellent today, outshooting [Penn State] 12-1. Hopefully, we carry over that attitude to tomorrow's game."
HOW IT UNFOLDED
Junior forward Anonda Hoppner scored a power play goal five minutes into the second period to break open what was a previously deadlocked 0-0 game. Her second goal of the season, assisted by sophomore forward Emma Polaski and junior forward Kelli Rowswell, gave the Orange a 1-0 lead.
It was all Welch and Syracuse's defense after that. The Orange goaltender had 11 saves in the second period, stopping a flurry of shots from the Nittany Lions to maintain Syracuse's one-goal advantage entering the intermission.
The Orange defense cranked up the intensity in the third period, suffocating Penn State's attack. The Nittany Lions managed just one shot on net in the third, as Welch and Syracuse held on to win 1-0.
OF NOTE
Welch, making her fifth start of the season, finished with 18 saves. The shutout is the third of her career.
Rowswell's assist was her team-high sixth of the season. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, native has assists in three straight games.
Syracuse finished with 29 shots on net. Rowswell led the team with five shots, followed by Hoppner (4), redshirt junior defenseman Lindsay Eastwood (4) and redshirt senior forward Brooke Avery (4).
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Syracuse and Penn State meet again at 2 p.m. tomorrow. The Orange then return for a home series at Tennity Ice Pavilion against Princeton Nov. 10-11.
