SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange head to Happy Valley for a pair of games against College Hockey America opponent Penn State this weekend. Puck drop in both conference tilts is set for 2 p.m. inside Pegula Ice Arena Saturday, Nov. 3 and Sunday, Nov. 4.
"These two games are going to be very competitive," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "These points here in early November are going to mean a lot in early March. We all know that."
ABOUT THE SERIES
Syracuse holds a commanding 21-1-4 all-time record against Penn State. The Orange suffered their first and only loss to the Nittany Lions in 2015 by the score of 4-2.
Syracuse and Penn State met four times last season. The Orange won three of the matchups, scoring ten goals in the process. The fourth game was played to a 2-2 tie.
SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS
The Nittany Lions are 4-5-1 to start the season and are coming off two straight conference losses at Mercyhurst.
Sophomore forward Natalie Heising is tied for the CHA lead and ranks sixth nationally with 13 points (6 goals, 7 assists) through 10 games played.
Junior goaltender Jenna Brenneman has started nine games this season for Penn State, making 190 saves and owning a .913 save percentage.
WHAT'S NEW WITH THE ORANGE
The Orange are coming off a 4-3 overtime loss at No. 2 Clarkson Saturday, Oct. 27. Syracuse enters this Saturday's game with an overall record of 2-6-0, including a 2-2-0 mark in conference play.
Alongside Bellefontaine, sophomore forward Emma Polaski is off to a strong start this season. She has tallied four goals through eight games, three of which have come on the power play.
Goaltenders Ady Cohen and Maddi Welch have split responsibilities in net through the Orange's first eight games. Cohen has 90 saves on the year thus far while Welch has 88.
ORANGE RECOGNIZED
Syracuse freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine was named College Hockey America's Rookie of the Month, the league announced Thursday, Nov. 1.
In the month of October, Bellefontaine led all CHA freshmen in goals (4) and points (7). She scored one goal against Mercyhurst (Oct. 12), two at Lindenwood (Oct. 20) and one at No. 2 Clarkson (Oct. 27).
Bellefontaine leads the Orange with seven points through eight games this season, recording five of those points in CHA games. She has tallied three assists to go along with her team-high four goals, and she has notched at least one shot in each game this season. She also leads all forwards with 15 blocks.
Bellefontaine, who earned CHA Rookie of the Week honors earlier this season, is the fourth Orange student-athlete in program history to receive the league's Rookie of the Month award, joining Jessica Sibley, Alysha Burriss and Stephanie Grossi.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Following Saturday's game at Penn State, the two sides will meet again at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Orange then return for a home series at Tennity Ice Pavilion against Princeton Nov. 10-11.
