
No. 3 Duke Eliminates No. 17 Syracuse in ACC Quarterfinals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 17th-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team lost, 4-1, against No. 3 Duke (15-4) in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Tournament. Roos Weers scored the lone goal for the Orange on a penalty stroke in the 60th minute.
Syracuse (8-8) faced an early 2-0 deficit when Duke scored twice in the opening ten minutes of play. The Orange had the only penalty corner of the game in the first half but were unable to convert leading the Blue Devils with a 2-0 lead by halftime.
Duke's Haley Scleicher converted a penalty stroke in the 52nd minute giving the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead. Eight minutes later Weers converted a penalty stroke, her second successful attempt of the season, to cut Duke's lead to two goals.
Rose Tynan, Duke's leading scorer, tallied an insurance goal in the 69th minute giving the Blue Devils their fourth and final goal of the game.
Duke outshot Syracuse 20-9 in the contest. Orange goalkeeper Borg van der Velde made nine stops in 70 minutes of action bringing her season total to 79 saves.
Weers' goal marked her team-best 11th on the season bringing her career total to 43. Freshmen Laura Graziosi and Tess Queen joined Weers as the other two 'Cuse players to record multiple shots in the game.
Syracuse's ACC Tournament run comes to an end while two-seed Duke advances and will play the winner of six-seed Wake Forest and three-seed Louisville in the semifinals on Friday.
The Orange now await their NCAA Tournament fate until Sunday night's selection show scheduled for 10 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
