SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Three-time Delaware State Champion Hailey Bitters will play field hockey for the Orange in 2019. Bitters led Delmar High School to back-to-back-to-back state titles from 2016-18 playing primarily as a midfielder and back for the Wildcats.
"I am extremely excited to welcome this 2019 class to our Syracuse family," head coach Ange Bradley said. "This class is one of the most talented classes we have recruited to Sryacuse. We have a balance of domestic and international talent. I am pleased to welcome this class to our global Syracuse family."
Bitters joins Marie Sommer as the second announced member of the 2019 class.
A native of Delmar, Md., Bitters helped lead Delmar's varsity team to a 13-3-1 record in eighth grade, a 15-2-1 record her freshman year and an 18-1 record and a state championship her sophomore year before being named team captain for her junior and senior year.
"Hailey has a passion and love for the game similar to former Syracuse All-American Alyssa Manley," Bradley said. "Her work rate, speed, skill, vision and curiosity about the game is exceptional. Having been a three-time state champion and former member of the US U17 squad, I expect Hailey to contribute to our team immediately. I am pleased to welcome Hailey to our Syracuse family."
Over the course of the next two seasons, the Wildcats went undefeated (18-0) each year and Bitters ended her high school career on a 43-game win streak. She earned all-conference honors all four years of high school and all-state accolades as a sophomore and junior.
Bitters is a member of the Shore Byrds club team under head coach Juli Bradford.
Bitters is highly active off the field as well. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Spanish Honor Society and is president of the Student Government.
"I want to contribute to a team that will win both an ACC championship and a national championship," Bitters said.
She was high school and club teammates with current Syracuse freshman Peyton Kemp.
Bitters says she chose Syracuse because she wants to attend a university with a highly respected academic program as well as an exceptional field hockey program.
