PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Syracuse faces five different opponents at the Mary Nutter Classic from Saturday, Feb. 17 through Monday, Feb. 19. The Orange face a pair of nationally-ranked opponents in the three-day tournament.
'Cuse opens up with No. 21/24 Utah and Sacramento State on Saturday at 3 p.m. (PT) and 8 p.m. (PT), respectively. On Sunday, Syracuse plays against Grand Canyon at 2:30 p.m. (PT) and No. 5/4 UCLA at 5 p.m. (PT). The Orange conclude play on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. (PT) contest against Cal Poly.
All games will be streamed live on FloSoftball. Live stats will be available for all games and the links can be found on cuse.com.
For Starters
- Syracuse went 2-1 to open up its season at the Tiger Classic. After dropping their season opener to UT Arlington, 1-0, the Orange won their following two games over UMass (4-0) and Southern Miss (8-3).
- Sophomore Alexa Romero pitched 12.1 innings with 19 strikeouts and one run charged against her to start off the 2018 slate. She won both of her starts to improve to 2-0.
- Â Junior Bryce Holmgren went 5-for-9 with a double three RBI and two runs during opening weekend. Junior Alicia Hansen hit the first triple of her career versus Southern Miss. She finished opening weekend 4-for-8 from the plate with a triple, two RBI, two runs and three walks. She has a team-high seven game hitting streak entering play this weekend.
- This is the first time that Syracuse returns to the Mary Nutter Classic since the 2015 season. The Orange posted a 3-2 record in its last appearance in the competition.
The Opponents
- 'Cuse holds a 4-0 all-time advantage over Utah (2-3). The Utes are led by the USA Softball Player of the Year "Watch List" member Alyssa Barerra (OF).
- The Orange meet Sacramento State (1-3) for the second time in program history. The Hornets won the lone meeting between the two schools, 3-1 (11 inn.), in 2006. Sacramento State's most consistent hitter during opening weekend was Zamari Hinton (9-16, 2B, RBI, 3 R).
- Syracuse matches up with Grand Canyon (3-3) for the first time in program history. Sierra Smith led the Lopes with a homerun, six RBI and four runs during their first six games.
- 'Cuse meets UCLA (6-0) for the eighth time in program history. The Bruins hold a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series and topped the Orange, 3-2, in 2016. Infielder Kylee Perez and pitcher Rachel Garcia were named to the USA Softball Player of the Year "Watch List" for UCLA.
- Syracuse faces Cal Poly (3-2) for the third time in program history. The teams split the previous two games, with 'Cuse winning the most recent outing, 3-2, in 2014. Hailey Martin was the top performer for Cal Poly during its opening weekend. In four games, Martin went 5-of-9 with a double and five RBI. Â
On the Orange Horizon
The Orange head to Houston, Texas to play in the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational from Friday, Feb. 23 through Sunday, Feb. 25.
