Romero Throws First Perfect Game Since 2000

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Sophomore Alexa Romero threw a perfect game to lead Syracuse (3-2) to an 8-0 win in five innings over Sacramento State Saturday night at the Mary Nutter Classic. The Orange lost their afternoon matchup, 6-0, to No. 21/24 Utah.
Romero's perfect game is the second in program history. Tara DiMaggio threw a perfect game at Buffalo on Apr. 25, 2000.
Utah 6, Syracuse 0
Katie Donovan allowed two hits and struck out seven over five innings of work to lead Utah to a 6-0 victory over Syracuse. Breonna Castenda batted 1-for-3 with a homerun and three RBI.
Sophomore Toni Martin finished 1-for-2 and freshman Neli Casares-Maher went 1-for-3.
Senior AnnaMarie Gatti started in the circle for the Orange and dropped to 0-2 on the season. In 4.1 innings, Gatti allowed four runs on six hits. Senior Baylee Douglass surrendered two runs (one earned) on three hits the rest of the way.
Utah drove in two runs with a single in the third. Castenda hit a two-run homer in the fifth and the Utes added an RBI single to take a 5-0 lead. Utah capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
The Orange had runners on first and second with one out in the second inning but were unable to drive any home.
Syracuse 8, Sacramento State 0 (5 inn.)
In five innings of work Romero didn't allow any baserunners and struck out nine. Her gem in the circle is the eighth no-hitter in program history and the first since Sydney O'Hara threw one in 2014.
Freshman Miranda Hearn went 2-for-2 with three RBI, a run and a walk. Junior Alicia Hansen finished 3-for-3 with two runs and Casares-Maher batted 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run.
Casares-Maher opened up the Syracuse scoring in the first inning with a double that drove in two runs. In the third, Hearn singled in two runs and a Sacramento State fielding error on the play allowed another runner to come home.
Hearn singled in another run in the top of the fifth and a triple by Martin brought Hearn home. Junior Hailey Archuleta hit a walk-off single to commence the mercy rule.
Of Note
Romero improves to 3-0 on the season for the Orange. In 17.1 innings of action, Romero has 28 strikeouts and a 0.40 ERA.
Syracuse finished with 10 hits against the Hornets and four different players drove in runs.

The Orange resume play at the Mary Nutter Classic on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 2:30 p.m. (PT) against Grand Canyon and 5:00 p.m. (PT) versus #5/4 UCLA.
