Syracuse 9, Grand Canyon 8 (10 inn.)
Freshman Neli Casares-Maher scored the game-winning run off of a Grand Canyon error to give Syracuse the walk-off win.
Five different Orange players drove in runs during the comeback victory over the Lopes. Junior Bryce Holmgren batted 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Junior Alicia Hansen finished 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, three runs and a walk and senior Rachel Burkhardt was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and two runs.
Senior AnnaMarie Gatti came on in the eighth inning and earned the win. She allowed one run (unearned) on two hits, walked one and struck out one. Sophomore Alexa Romero started for Syracuse and pitched a total of 5.1 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits with a strikeout and three walks. Freshman Miranda Hearn pitched 1.2 innings and allowed a run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.
An RBI double in the top of the fourth gave Grand Canyon a 5-0 lead. Hansen scored on a groundout to pull the Orange back within four.
Syracuse brought home three runs in the fifth inning. With two outs, sophomore Toni Martin singled and Burkhardt brought her home with an RBI double. Hansen singled to center to drive in Burkhardt and Casares-Maher doubled to plate another run.
The Lopes took a 6-4 lead in the sixth with an RBI double. The Orange were down to their last out with runners on first and third and Holmgren stepped up to the plate. She singled through the middle to drive home a run and a throwing error by a GCU outfielder allowed the game-tying run to score.
The teams each plated one run in both the eighth and ninth innings. The 'Cuse runs came off of RBI hits from Hearn in the eighth and Holmgren in the ninth.
The Lopes loaded the bases with one out in the 10th, but Gatti was able to get Syracuse out of the jam with a force-out at home and a fly-out to right field.
UCLA 6, Syracuse 0
A four-run second inning propelled UCLA past Syracuse Sunday night. Pitcher Rachel Garcia threw a complete game shutout, allowing one hit and fanning 10. Bubba Nickels went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun.
Senior Sammy Fernandez was 1-for-3 for the Orange. Gatti allowed four runs on two hits with five walks and two strikeouts in two innings of work. Hearn surrendered two runs on three hits with a walk the rest of the way.
Nickel's homer, an RBI groundout and a 2 RBI single gave the Bruins a 4-0 lead in the second. UCLA added two insurance runs with a double that plated two runs.
The Orange had runners on second and third with two outs in the seventh but were unable to capitalize.
