Orange alum Joe Whelan took home the crown at the Austin Marathon on Sunday, in an impressive win, where he defeated Craig Leon – a 2016 Olympic Trials qualifier.
It's his second road race win in as many months, winning the 3M Half Maraton in January, Whelan crossed the line in 2:21.37, nearly a full two minutes ahead of Leon, and five seconds ahead of third-place finisher Daniel Bishop.
Whelan, who finished his eligibility in the 2013-14 season, qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary in the 3000-meter steeplechase on two occasions during his outdoor campaigns. He also competed in four NCAA Championships, finishing as high as 55th nationally, helping to lay the program groundwork for the 2015 NCAA title run.
