ELON, N.C. – Sophomore Alexa Romero pitched a complete game and struck out a career-high 13 batters to lead Syracuse (13-7) to a 4-2 win over Elon (13-9) Tuesday evening in a non-conference matchup.
In seven innings, Romero allowed two runs on two hits with three walks.
Junior Bryce Holmgren finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Junior Alicia Hansen was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs and freshman Lailoni Mayfield drove in two runs with a pinch-hit double.
How it was Decided
Hansen singled, stole second base and moved to third on a single by Holmgren. Holmgren stole second base and Hansen scored on the play to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead. An RBI single by freshman Gabby Teran increased the lead to two.
With one out in the fifth, Hansen earned a one-out walk and Holmgren singled to give the Orange runners on first and second. Teran moved them over with a sac bunt and Mayfield cleared the bases with a double.
A two run homer in the bottom of the seventh pulled the Phoenix within two, but Romero forced a pop-out and followed with a strikeout to seal the victory.
