'Cuse Cruises Past Virginia in Five

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A season-high run output, combined with sophomore Alexa Romero's third no-hitter of 2018, led Syracuse (14-7, 3-1 ACC) to a 12-0 victory over Virginia (8-18, 0-4 ACC) in five innings Friday night.
'Cuse faces the Cavaliers tomorrow at 1 p.m. in game two of a three-game series.
Freshman Gabby Teran led the Orange, batting 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI, three runs, two walks and two stolen bases. Junior Andrea Bombace finished 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run and sophomore Toni Martin went 1-for-1 with an RBI, two runs and two walks.
In five innings of work, Romero struck out nine batters and walked two.
How it was Decided
Syracuse loaded the bases in the second inning and Bombace brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. Bombace had an RBI groundout in the fourth and Martin scored on a Virginia error to give the Orange a 3-0 lead.
'Cuse scored nine runs on three hits and four Cavalier errors in the fifth. Martin earned an RBI on a bases loaded walk and freshman Neli Casares-Maher drove in a run with a single up the middle. Teran came home on a wild pitch and Bombace later singled in a run.
Later in the inning Bombace scored on an error, Hansen added an RBI on and reached on an error and Teran cleared the bases with a two-RBI double.
Of Note
Romero is the first Syracuse pitcher to throw three no-hitters in a single season. The performance was her second no-no in her last three appearances.
Junior Bryce Holmgren walked to reach base in her 43rd consecutive game. However, her team-high eight game hitting-streak was snapped.
Eight different Orange members scored at least one run.
Head coach Mike Bosch picked up his 597th career win. He is now three wins shy of eclipsing 600.
