Orange Outlasted by Virginia in 11

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Lacy Smith hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 11th to lift Virginia (9-18, 1-4 ACC) to a 9-8 victory over Syracuse (14-8, 3-2 ACC) Saturday evening.
The two teams will meet tomorrow at 12 p.m. for the final contest of the three-game series.
Junior Bryce Holmgren went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two walks to lead the Orange. Freshman Lailoni Mayfield finished 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, two runs and a walk.
Senior AnnaMarie Gatti started for 'Cuse and gave up three runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Sophomore Alexa Romero dropped to 10-5 on the season after conceding six runs (one unearned) on ten hits with four strikeouts.
Smith finished 2-for-6 with two RBI and two runs for the Cavaliers. Erika Osherow got the win in the circle, allowing four runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
How it was Decided
Holmgren and Mayfield hit RBI singles and a wild pitch along with a Virginia error gave Syracuse a 4-0 lead through 3.5 innings. Virginia tacked on a run in the bottom of the third and three in the fifth to even the score up at four.
With two outs in the 10th the Orange drew three straight walks and junior Alicia Hansen cleared the bases with a triple to right center. Holmgren singled in Hansen during the next at-bat to give 'Cuse an 8-4 lead.
The Cavaliers answered back with four runs in the bottom of the 10th to tie it back up and walked off in the 11th on Smith's homer.
Of Note
Virginia outhit Syracuse 13-11 and the Orange left 13 runners on base.
This is the first time in 2018 that 'Cuse has lost when scoring three or more runs.
Holmgren extends her program-best reached-base streak to 44 games.
