TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Zoe Cases broke up a scoreless game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI sacrifice fly to lead No. 14/12 Florida State (24-6, 4-0 ACC) to a 1-0 victory over Syracuse (15-9, 4-3 ACC) Friday night in the first matchup of a three-game series.
The Orange will face the Seminoles in game two tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Sophomore Alexa Romero went the distance for the 'Cuse, surrendering one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and four walks. Senior Sammy Fernandez recorded Syracuse's only two hits and finished 2-for-3.
Kylee Hanson pitched a complete game shutout for the Seminoles. She gave up two hits, one walk and struck out 11.
How it was Decided
A two-out sequence in the top of the third gave the Orange an early chance to capitalize. Sophomore Toni Martin reached on an error and moved to third on a single by Fernandez. Fernandez stole second to give 'Cuse runners on second and third. Hanson forced a fly-out from the next batter to escape the jam.
Fernandez singled in the sixth and junior Bryce Holmgren walked with two outs to give the Orange runners on first and second. Hanson forced another fly-out to avoid any damage.
A walk and a hit-by-pitch gave Florida State runners on first and second with no outs. The runners advanced on a groundout, which set up the Cases sacrifice fly.
Of Note
Holmgren's walk in the sixth extended her program-best reached base streak to 46 straight games.
The teams combined for just five hits, with the Seminoles holding a 3-2 advantage.
The Orange left four runners on base, with three being in scoring position.
