Orange 7th-Inning Rally Falls Short

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Syracuse's (15-11, 4-5 ACC) seventh-inning rally came up short in a 5-4 loss to No. 14/12 Florida State (26-6, 6-0 ACC) Sunday in the series finale between the two schools.
With the Orange trailing 5-2 entering the seventh, senior Jessica Heese walked and freshman Gabby Teran singled to give 'Cuse runners on first and second with two outs. The runners advanced on a throwing error and junior Bryce Holmgren drove in two runs with a single down the left-field line to pull Syracuse within one. The Seminoles struck out the next batter to seal the win.
Sophomore pitcher Alexa Romero drops to 10-7 on the season after the setback. In 3.2 innings, Romero gave up five runs (one unearned) on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Freshman Miranda Hearn pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, conceding three hits with a strikeout.
Junior Alicia Hansen and freshman Michala Maciolek drove in the other two runs for the Orange.
Kylee Hanson pitched four innings and was credited with the win. She allowed two runs (one unearned) on two hits, walked two and struck out six. Leslie Ferris went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Game Summary
Florida State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Carsyn Gordon hit a solo homerun. The Orange answered back in the top of the second. Holmgren and freshman Lailoni Mayfield led off with back-to-back walks and Maciolek drove in Holmgren with an RBI double to right center.
The Seminoles retook the lead in the bottom of the third. Cali Harrod led off the inning with a triple and scored on a throwing error. Florida State added three more in the fourth off an RBI single by Korina Rosario and a two-run homer from Ferris.
Syracuse brought home another run in the fifth to make it 5-2. Freshman Neli Casares-Maher led off with a single and moved to third on a Seminole error. Hansen plated Casares-Maher with a two-out RBI single to left field.
Of Note
The Seminoles held a 9-7 advantage in hits and each side left six runners on base.
Seven different Syracuse players knocked a base hit.
Florida State extends its regular-season ACC winning streak to 32 games dating back to 2016.
What's Next
Syracuse concludes its 28-game season-opening road trip when it plays a doubleheader at Army West Point on Wednesday, Mar. 28. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
