Romero Tosses No-Hitter, 'Cuse Wins Two at VT

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Alexa Romero threw her second no-hitter of 2018 to lead Syracuse (12-6, 2-0 ACC) to a 2-0 win over Virginia Tech (10-12, 0-2 ACC) in the ACC opener for both teams. The Orange completed the Friday sweep with an 8-1 victory in game two.
'Cuse conclude its three-game series with the Hokies tomorrow at noon.
Game 1: Syracuse 2, Virginia Tech 0
Romero totaled nine strikeouts and walked two on her way to throwing the program's ninth no-hitter. She struck out the first five batters she faced on the day.
Junior Bryce Holmgren finished 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double. Senior Sammy Fernandez went 1-for-3.
Sophomore Gianna Carideo led-off the third with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Fernandez. A fielder's choice gave Syracuse runners on the corners and Holmgren cleared the bases with a double down the leftfield line.
Game 2: Syracuse 8, Virginia Tech 1
Senior AnnaMarie Gatti earned her third win of the season. In 5.1 innings, she allowed one run (unearned) on four hits with three walks.
Junior Alicia Hansen finished 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, two RBI and three runs. Fernandez batted 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run and Holmgren went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Senior Faith Cain hit a pinch-hit double and scored a run.
In the first, Fernandez hit a leadoff single and stole second base, before being brought home on an RBI single from Hansen. Holmgren walked and a wild pitch gave the Orange runners on second and third. Freshman Gabby Teran plated Hansen with a sacrifice fly. Fernandez hit an RBI single to in the second to give 'Cuse a 3-0 lead.
A pair of Syracuse throwing errors in the fourth allowed the Hokies to get on the board, but Teran hit an RBI groundout in the fifth to give the Orange a 4-1 lead.
'Cuse continued to build on its lead in the sixth. Sophomore Toni Martin hit a two-RBI single, Hansen drove in a run with a triple and Holmgren added an RBI single.
Virginia Tech loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but Romero came on and struck out two consecutive batters to get the Orange out of the jam.
Of Note
Syracuse starts out 2-0 in ACC play for the first time and improves to 2-3 all-time in ACC openers.
Romero is the second pitcher to throw multiple no-hitters for the Orange. Jenna Caira threw four no-hitters for 'Cuse from 2009-12. She combined to pitch 8.2 hitless innings between the two games with 12 strikeouts.
Head coach Mike Bosch improves to 5-0 all-time against Virginia Tech.
