‘Cuse Walk-Off Win Highlights Split With Louisville

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Lailoni Mayfield hit an RBI walk-off single to lead Syracuse (21-18, 5-11 ACC) to a 4-3 victory over Louisville (24-17, 7-7 ACC) Friday evening in game two of a doubleheader at Skytop Softball Stadium. The Cardinals won game one, 3-2.
'Cuse and Louisville are scheduled to conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Game 1: Louisville 3, Syracuse 2
Megan Hensley pitched a complete game to lead Louisville to the victory. She allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts, while batting 1-for-2 with a solo homerun.
Sophomore Alexa Romero dropped to 13-11 on the season for Syracuse. She gave up all three runs in 4.2 innings before giving way to freshman Miranda Hearn, who allowed one hit and walked two the rest of the way. Junior Alicia Hansen hit a two-run homer.
Hensley's solo shot, along with an RBI single by Kyra Snyder gave Louisville a 2-0 lead in the first. The Cardinals added an insurance run off an RBI hit by Sidney Melton in the fifth.
Senior Sammy Fernandez hit an infield single in the bottom half of the fifth and Hansen homered during the next at-bat to pull Syracuse within one. The Orange were unable to get on base for the remainder of the game.
Game 2: Syracuse 4, Louisville 3
Mayfield finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and freshman Gabby Teran went 2-for-2 with a run and two walks. Hearn went 1-for-3 with two RBI, a run and a walk and Fernandez batted 2-for-4 with a triple and a run.
Senior AnnaMarie Gatti recorded all 21 outs for 'Cuse, while surrendering two runs (one earned) on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Romero walked the only batter she faced and was charged with a run.
Syracuse took the lead in the third inning when Hearn recorded an RBI groundout with the bases loaded. The Orange doubled their lead when Fernandez stole home on a double-steal in the fourth.
Louisville pulled within one run in the fifth with an RBI single and took the lead in the seventh inning off a double that drove in two runs.
In the bottom of the frame, Teran led off with a walk and was bunted over to second base. Hearn singled to right field to plate Teran and tie the game at three.
Junior Hannah Dossett, the next batter, reached on a fielder's choice and Hearn advanced to second on a muffed catch at the bag. Freshman Michala Maciolek followed up with a walk to load the bases with one out for Mayfield. Her RBI single to right lifted the Orange to the victory.
Of Note
Teran went a combined 3-for-4 with a run and three walks over the course of the doubleheader.
'Cuse improves to 15-0 when leading after six innings. Although the Orange lost the lead in the seventh they managed to come back and win.
Syracuse is now 20-2 in 2018 when scoring at least three runs.
