SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 16/19 Syracuse broke an 8-8 tie with 11 unanswered goals to defeat Louisville, 19-8, in the Carrier Dome on Sunday, April 22. The Orange end the regular season with a 9-8 record, including a 1-6 record in ACC play. Syracuse is the No. 6 seed in next week's ACC Tournament and will take on No. 5/5 North Carolina in the quarterfinals.
"Louisville played a very good first half and matched our intensity," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "At halftime, we challenged our team to step it up, let them know the importance of this game and the players rose to the challenge. We had a very good second half – came out and put the game away."
Junior Nicole Levy and freshman Sam Swart scored three goals apiece for the Orange, while freshman Molly Carter dished out a season-high five assists. That total is the highest for any Syracuse player in a game this season.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Syracuse led 7-5 at halftime and Mary Rahal scored 34 seconds into the second half to give the Orange an 8-5 advantage. Louisville (6-10, 0-7) responded with three straight goals to even the score at 8-8.
Emily Howell's game-tying goal at the 25:15 mark would be the Cardinals' last tally of the game. Sophomore Emily Hawryschuk broke the tie 19 seconds later with her first of two goals to spark Syracuse on an 11-0 scoring run to end the game. Nine different players scored during the offensive outburst, including Hawryschuk and Levy, who had two goals apiece.
Carter assisted on four of Syracuse's first five goals to start the game as Syracuse jumped out to a 5-2 advantage. Back-to-back goals by Louisville brought the Cardinals within one, 6-5, but redshirt sophomore Cara Quimby found the back of the net on an assist from senior Alie Jimerson to give the Orange a two-goal lead at intermission.
OF NOTE
Twelve different players scored for the Orange in the victory, including five that had multiple goals. Senior Alie Jimerson finished with four points on a goal and three assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Asa Goldstock recorded 11 saves in nearly 53 minutes of action. It marked the second consecutive game that she has reached double figures in saves and the ninth this season. She came into the game ranked 13th in the nation in total saves.
Sunday's game was the final regular-season home game for Syracuse's senior class. Erin Coleman, Mia DiBello, Riley Donahue, Ella Hogan, Alie Jimerson, Neena Merola, Zoe Recchion and Kelzi Van Atta were honored in a pregame ceremony for their dedication to the program.
