'Cuse Topped at Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Senior Sammy Fernandez recorded the 206th hit of her career to tie Tanya Rose as the all-time base hits leader in program history and Syracuse (18-17, 4-10 ACC) lost to Notre Dame (26-12, 10-4 ACC), 5-1, in game two of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Irish took the first matchup 8-0 in six innings.
Game 1: Notre Dame 8, Syracuse 0 (6 inn.)
Katie Beriont pitched a complete game shutout to lead Notre Dame to the victory. Sara White went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and two runs.
Sophomore Alexa Romero was credited with the loss after giving up three runs in the first inning. Senior AnnaMarie Gatti entered in the second inning and went the rest of the way, allowing five runs (two earned) with a walk and a strikeout. Senior Jessica Heese went 1-for-2 with a triple.
White's three-run homer gave the Fighting Irish a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Notre Dame added an unearned run in the third and two more in the fifth.
The Irish loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth and back-to-back RBI singles from Abby Sweet and Cait Brooks left Notre Dame walking off with an eight-run rule win.
Game 2: Notre Dame 5, Syracuse 1
Alexis Holloway pitched a complete game and surrendered one run on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Sweet finished 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run.
Freshman Miranda Hearn pitched the first complete game of her career. She surrendered five runs on 10 hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Freshman Neli Casares-Maher was 1-1 with an RBI and a walk.
'Cuse took an early 1-0 lead in the first. Fernandez hit a leadoff single and stole second base. Junior Bryce Holmgren walked and freshman Gabby Teran moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Casares-Maher earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly to score Fernandez.
The Fighting Irish retook the lead in the third off an RBI double by Katie Marino and another run scored on a single from Sweet. Three more runs in the fifth extended the Notre Dame lead to 5-1.
With two outs in the seventh, Heese and Fernandez had back-to-back walks and Holmgren singled to load the bases. Holloway forced a fly-out to seal the victory.
What's Next
The Orange travel to Siena for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 11. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
