Orange alumnae Stephanie Skilton Cleave ('17) continues to shine on the international stage, representing 'Cuse on the New Zealand Women's National Team, the Football Ferns. Cleave has worked her way up through the Ferns organization, playing at an international level for New Zealand since 2010.
Â
Cleave's first international exposure came at the 2010 U17 World Cup, where she made two apperances for New Zealand. Upon moving up to the U20 team, the forward played for her country at both the 2012 and 2014 U20 World Cups. Cleave made her National Team debut on March 7, 2014 when she entered as a substitute against Switzerland.
Â
Most recently, Cleave has been playing with the NZWNT as they make tours across the world, looking to qualify for the 2019 Women's World Cup.
Â
"I have been on the Football Ferns NZWNT squad since 2014 but this home tour was my first in a new position (center back)," said Cleave. "It proved to be a successful transition as I earned my first start in the game against Japan. I feel that my true purpose on the team is at center back and I'm thoroughly enjoying this new challenge and opportunity."
Â
Cleave has five caps, or international appearances with the NZWNT, her most recent coming in the Ferns' 3-1 loss to 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup champions Japan. Despite the loss, Cleave recognizes the honor she has to represent New Zealand internationally.
Â
"Putting on the NZ shirt and wearing the fern on my chest during every training session is something that I am so unbelievably proud of," said Cleave. "It keeps me motivated and driven to keep working to represent my country in the game that has given me so much and the game that I wholeheartedly love."
Â
The Football Ferns faithful came out to support the team against Japan, shattering the attendance record with 7,236 fans in the stands.
Â
"Playing in front of family and friends at home is an unreal feeling and something that I will cherish forever," said Cleave. "I am so proud and honored to play for the NZWNT and I will continue to strive for more success with the team moving forward."
Â
In her four-year career at 'Cuse, Cleave totaled 58 points (27 goals, four assists), ranking fifth on the all-time points ledger. Her 27 goals is good for second for career goals, with seven of those 27 checking in as game winners.
