Syracuse, N.Y. – Ten years after Syracuse Field Hockey made the NCAA Final Four for the first time in program history, Lena (Voelmle) Landis still remembers the 2008 season as an incredible experience. Landis now lives in Yuma, Ariz., with her husband and their three sons Griffin, Reid and Boden, and is a certified personal trainer. Landis, along with all Syracuse alumnae have been invited back to campus to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2008 Final Four team Sept. 21-23.
"Field hockey pushed me physically and mentally in ways I didn't know a sport could," Landis said. "The bond that our 2008 team had was so incredibly special and what also seemed like impossible to replicate. Making it to the Final Four was an experience I will never forget."
Landis came to Syracuse with head coach Ange Bradley in 2007 after beginning her career at Richmond. As a sophomore in 2008, Landis appeared in all 24 games scoring two goals on eight shots on goal. She earned the start in the national semifinals against Wake Forest where she fired one of Syracuse's 16 total shots in the 3-2 overtime loss.
Landis was named BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament Team in 2009 and was a BIG EAST and ECAC Defensive Player of the Week honoree for her efforts against Connecticut in 2009.
After graduation, she married her husband, a U.S. Marine, and moved to Florida, then California and now currently reside in Arizona.
Landis also teaches group exercise classes and offers nutrition counseling. She enjoys being outdoors with her family, camping, swimming, riding bikes and exploring. Despite living in the desert now and it "being a little bit harder", Landis says, "being outside is what it's all about!"
The 2008 team will return to 'Cuse Sept. 21-23 when Syracuse hosts two home games. The Orange will play Pacific on Friday at 5:30 pm and Penn on Sunday for a 1 pm matinee. Additionally, the team will be recognized during Syracuse's football game in the Carrier Dome against Connecticut.
