No. 11 ‘Cuse Defeats Vermont 4-1 in Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Laura Graziosi's first career goal also served as her first game-winning goal when she scored in the 30th minute to put Syracuse ahead 2-1 in Friday's season opener. The 11th-ranked Orange went on to win 4-1 over Vermont improving, to 12-0 in season openers under head coach Ange Bradley.
Kira Wimbert put 'Cuse ahead early when she scored, unassisted, off a rebounded shot in the 11th minute. Less than two minutes later, the Catamounts evened the score when Sydney Melfi scored on a penalty stroke.
The two teams remained even until Graziosi netted her first attempt in an Orange jersey. As the clock ticked town in the first half, senior captain Roos Weers scored off a penalty corner, assisted by freshman Tess Queen, to give 'Cuse a 3-1 lead.
In the 51st minute Wimbert split the Catamount defense and fed a diving Chiara Gutsche a pass down the goal line, connecting perfectly for the sophomores' first goal of the season. 'Cuse held on to win 4-1.
The Orange improve to 9-3 all-time against Vermont and 2-0 in games played against the Catamounts with Bradley at the helm. Additionally, Syracuse has now won 12-consecutive home openers and is 29-11-1 in program history on season debuts.
'Cuse has a quick turnaround to prepare for its first nationally-ranked opponent of 2018. The Orange host No. 21 Albany on Sunday. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium and can be viewed live on ACC Network Extra.
