Syracuse, N.Y. – It will be a short drive northeast for Heather Susek when she and her fellow Syracuse teammates gather to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Orange's first NCAA Final Four appearance this fall. The former BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year currently resides in nearby Skaneateles, teaches physical education, and coaches both field hockey and tennis at Moravia High School.
She is no stranger to the Syracuse campus these days. Susek, a 2012 graduate, coaches the Syracuse University Club Field Hockey team with current Orange associate head coach Allan Law.
"I am thrilled to have helped create a legacy for 'Cuse to win the national championship in 2015," Susek said. "And being the first women's team in Syracuse history to ever do so makes me proud to be Orange."
During her freshman season in 2008, Syracuse posted a 22-2 record and reached the Final Four for the first time in program history. To commemorate the 10th anniversary, the Orange squad is invited back to campus Sept. 21-23 to celebrate the milestone.
In 2008, Susek appeared in eight games for Syracuse. She made her collegiate debut against No. 8 Old Dominion, a game the Orange won 5-0, and scored her first career goal in a 12-0 win against Colgate.
As her career flourished, the awards rolled in for Susek. She was a three-time Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region selection and was a third team all-American in 2010 and received all-American honors again in 2011. She was invited to the NFHCA Senior Game and was the BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year after scoring 19 goals and tallying seven assists in 23 games during her final season at 'Cuse.
"One of my most memorable moments, besides making it to the Final Four in 2008, was beating UConn at home during my senior year in the BIG EAST Championship," Susek said.
This past season, Susek led MHS to an 11-6 record and the team received Finger Lakes Field Hockey Officials Association (FLFHOA) Sportsmanship Award.
She ran her first half marathon last summer and completed her first full marathon earlier this summer. In her spare time, she enjoys kayaking on Skaneateles Lake, playing tennis and golfing.
"I guess it's safe to say I'm still trying to keep in shape but I'm glad it's not running the orange crush," Susek joked.
The 2008 NCAA Final Four team will return to 'Cuse Sept. 21-23 when Syracuse hosts two home games. The Orange will play Pacific on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Penn on Sunday for a 1 p.m. matinee. The team will be recognized during Syracuse's football game in the Carrier Dome against Connecticut.
All Syracuse field hockey alumnae are invited to join the celebration. If you plan to attend the 2008 Final Four 10th Anniversary Weekend, please RSVP to Vanessa Jecko (vejecko@syr.edu).
