Syracuse, N.Y. – Nicole Nelson etched her name in the Syracuse record books ten years ago. Then a freshman on the 2008 Syracuse Field Hockey team, Nelson scored the game-winning overtime goal against Princeton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to send Syracuse to its first Final Four in program history.
"Making it to the Final Four my freshman year is one of the coolest experiences I have ever had and something I will never forget," Nelson said. "I really couldn't have asked for a better student-athlete or college experience than what I had at 'Cuse."
This weekend, several members of the 2008 squad are coming back to campus to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Syracuse's first field hockey semifinals appearance. Nelson will be one of them.
Now a first-time homeowner in South Philadelphia, Pa., Nelson works as a marketing manager for a worldwide company.
"My company is based in Philly, Seattle, Scottsdale and Prague," Nelson said. "I get to do a lot of fun things traveling around the country, putting on events and working with our clients and partners."
Ten years ago Nelson helped the Orange to a 22-2 overall record and their first appearance in the NCAA Final Four.
"We had an amazing team that worked really hard and crushed it on the field," Nelson said. "But we also had tons of fun off the field."
She appeared in all 24 games and earned nine starts scoring six goals as a freshman in 2008. Nelson finished her career with 89 games under her belt as a three-time NFHCA All-Region selection.
"My time at Syracuse was four of the best years ever," Nelson said. "The friends I made through field hockey are still my closest friends to this day and are a huge part of my life."
The 2008 team will return to 'Cuse Sept. 21-23 when Syracuse hosts two home games. The Orange will play Pacific on Friday at 5:30 pm and Penn on Sunday for a 1 pm matinee. Additionally, the team will be recognized during Syracuse's 4pm football game in the Carrier Dome against Connecticut.
