Former Syracuse goalkeeper Alex Bono and the U.S. men's national team are in action this weekend as the six-game Kickoff Series gets underway. The U.S. takes on five-time World Champion Brazil on Friday, Sept. 7 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Four days later, Team USA will face Mexico in Nashville at Nissan Stadium.
Â
Bono earned his first cap for the U.S. men's national team in May when he played all 90 minutes and recorded a clean sheet in the squad's 3-0 friendly win over Bolivia. None of Bolivia's five shots were on goal, but Bono did make five recoveries and caught a cross. He also made 10 successful passes out of the box.
Â
Bono, a native of nearby Baldwinsville, N.Y., started 59 matches in three seasons (2012-14) at Syracuse. He posted a 39-17-3 record, including 30 shutouts. Bono guided the team to two NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearances. In 2014, he earned NSCAA All-America First Team honors and was named one of the three finalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy, presented to college soccer's player of the year.
The 2015 'Cuse Awards Male Athlete of the Year, Bono was selected sixth overall in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC. Bono holds a record of 29-11-12 in 52 professional matches with 15 clean sheets. In 2017, Bono made 72 saves and posted a 19-4-6, including 10 shutouts, to lead Toronto FC to the MLS title.
Â
Friday's match against Brazil starts at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time and will be broadcast on FS1, UniMas and UDN. The USA-Mexico game begins at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time with ESPN, UniMas and UDN broadcasting the action.
