Orange Split Series with Robert Morris
1/19/2019 3:30:00 PM | Ice Hockey
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Robert Morris (9-11-4, 7-2-1 CHA) broke through for two second-period goals to create separation and never looked back, downing the Syracuse women's hockey team by a score of 5-1 on a snowy Saturday afternoon. The Orange's record in College Hockey America play moves to 5-5-0, while their overall record now stands at 5-17-1.
Redshirt junior defenseman Lindsay Eastwood, who scored yesterday's game-winning goal in overtime, powered Syracuse's offense with her fifth goal of the season, but it was not enough for the Orange to complete a series sweep against the Colonials inside Tennity Ice Pavilion.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
A tightly contested first period took an unexpected turn when Robert Morris scored with 52 seconds remaining. The Colonials' tally marred what had otherwise been an excellent start for the Orange, who outshot Robert Morris, 9-5, in the first period.
The Colonials would extended their lead to 3-0 with two second-period goals, both of which came on power-play opportunities. Robert Morris' Emily Curlett's goal nine minutes into the second period was the eventual game-winner, and Amber Rennie would tack on another under two minutes later.
Eastwood scored on a power play five minutes into the third, cutting the deficit back down to two and briefly igniting Syracuse's energy. The Colonials, however, responded with two more goals, including one on a power play and an empty-netter, over the final 10 minutes of regulation to seal the 5-1 win.
OF NOTE
Eastwood's third-period goal was unassisted. She has scored in back-to-back games and now ranks tied for third on the Orange in goals (5) this season.
Junior forward Logan Hicks, senior defenseman Allie Munroe and freshman forward Abby Moloughney each had three shots on net, leading an Orange offense that was only outshot by one.Â
Senior goaltender Maddi Welch started in net and came up with 19 saves. She has recorded at least 19 saves in 12 games this season.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The home swing continues next weekend with another CHA opponent in town. Syracuse plays Penn State at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25 and 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 inside Tennity.Â
