SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A late goal in the dying moments of the third period pushed No. 3 Northeastern (2-0) to a 2-1 victory over Syracuse (0-4) in the opening game of the Orange and Huskies' Friday/Saturday series at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Junior alternate captain Kristen Siermachesky scored Syracuse's lone goal, the lamp-lighter the first of her career. Junior goaltender Allison Small made a career-high 36 saves too. The Orange and the Huskies play their final game Saturday at 3 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Â
"We really played well and worked extremely hard and I felt that the win was going to happen tonight," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "The team was awesome on the bench and had a ton of energy. The power-play goal was very defusing for our energy, but even when they tied it, I still thought the team responded well. It was just a tough break at the end."

How It Happened
Syracuse opened the game extremely hot and outshot the opposition 12-5 before the 10th minute of play. The momentum shifted sharply midway through frame one though as the Huskies began to pepper the net, forcing Small to ultimately make 15 stops in the opening period.
Â
The second period was more of the same as both goaltenders fought valiantly for their respective teams, with Smalls making 28 saves between the first two periods and Northeastern goaltender Aerin Frankel stopping 16.Â
Â
The Orange opened the third period with another strong start, and their work finally paid off as Siermachesky found the back of the net on a wide open spot from just above the right faceoff circle. Northeastern responded quicky though, converting on a power play Brooke Hobson with 10:12 remaining in regulation.
Â
The Huskies would leave the rink victorious as Mia Brown beat Small with just 23 seconds left in the game, clinching the victory.
